Letter to the Norwegian Government: Stop Statoil

To the Norwegian Government:
I am totally opposed to the oil exploration being undertaken by Statoil in the Pegasus and Reinga Basins off the shores of New Zealand.
As the majority shareholder in Statoil, the Norwegian government has control over the activities of the company.
The activities of Statoil are not welcome in New Zealand. I want the company to return its permits to the New Zealand government and cease all operations in New Zealand immediately.
Given the known catastrophic climate effects of burning fossil fuels, there is no room in our collective future for further oil exploration. And no matter what safety measures are taken, the risks of deep sea oil drilling are too great. The marine species that occupy the seas around New Zealand must be not be exposed to any further risks. Their existence is already too fragile.
I will work individually and collectively to resist Statoil’s operations anywhere in New Zealand, and stand in solidarity with people around the world who are working against further fossil fuel extraction.
You have the ability to stop Statoil exploration in New Zealand. I urge you to do so immediately.
