Oil and Gas Subsidies – who pays to decommission oil industry infrastructure?

Our friends at Climate Justice Taranaki are worried that it will be us! Current plans could see the government subsidise oil and gas companies by approximately $800 million to decommission old oil rigs in Taranaki over the next few years.
However the government has already spent their oil royalties so are scrambling to find the money through the ird.
We’ll be putting the question of why $800 million is being spent on oil and gas at a time of climate crisis directly to government MPs and candidates during debates. We invite you to as well!
To give some perspective, $28 million is budgeted for predator free NZ 2050, and $90 million for essential maintenance on the Wellington rail network.
